Most households own three or four sets of bedding and wear out one of them. The favourite comes off the bed, goes through the wash and returns two days later, while the others sit on the shelf yellowing gently. A rotation is not a fussy system; it is the difference between bedding that lasts five years and bedding that lasts two.
Why the favourite dies first
Fabric wear is driven by wash cycles, not by calendar time. If one set takes forty washes a year and the others take five each, the first one thins at the hip line, loses elastic tension and starts to pill while the spares look new. Rotation simply spreads the same laundry load across more fabric.
The bottom of the pile rule
The entire system fits in one sentence: clean bedding goes to the bottom of the stack, and you always take from the top. It works because it needs no labels, no diary and no willpower. Anyone else in the house can follow it without being told twice.
How many sets is sensible
Two sets per bed is workable, three is comfortable, four is storage you are paying for. With three you always have one on the bed, one clean and one in the wash after an accident or a spilt drink. Fold rather than hang, since hanging distorts the elastic edge over months.
The honest limit of any system
Rotation slows wear; it does not prevent it. A set washed weekly at forty degrees will still show its age in a few years, and the fitted sheet will always fail before the flat sheet and pillowcases. Buying a fourth set to postpone that day is usually money spent on cupboard space rather than on sleep.
